Shipp moved to Los Angeles at the age of 17 to pursue a career in acting and was discovered by a talent manager at age 14. Her first roles were in the 2009 film Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Squeakquel followed by minor roles in the teen drama series House of Anubis (2013), and Drumline: A New Beat (2014).
Finally, in 2014 she portrayed Aaliyah Haughton in the Lifetime television film Aaliyah: The Princess of R&B. This is considered her breakthrough role.
