While at the Royal Shakespeare Company (RSC) Lesser was an associate artist. There he played many of Shakespeare's roles in the productions of Troilus and Cressida, King Lear, The Tragedy of Julius Caesar, and Winter's Tale, to name a few.

Since starting his professional career in 1979, Lesser has worked in TV series including The Mill on the Floss (1979), Freud (1984), Invasion: Earth (1998), as Charles Dickens in Dickens (2002), Little Dorrit (2008), as Qyburn in Game of Thrones (2013- present), The Crown (2017).
