Who is Dan Hurley?

Dan Hurley is a college basketball coach by profession and American by nationality. He is the head coach at the University of Connecticut’s UConn Huskies men's team, having previously coached at Wagner College and the University of Rhode Island.

Dan Hurley’s birth took place in Jersey City, New Jersey, USA on January 16, 1973. His full name is Daniel S. Hurley, his mother’s name is Christine Hurley and his father’s name is Bob Hurley Sr., a high school coach. His parents raised him alongside his two siblings - older brother Bobby Hurley and sister Melissa Hurley.

Like their father, Bobby is also a college basketball coach and former basketball player. He played for Duke, and Sacramento Kings and is the head coach at Arizona State University.

Hurley met fellow Seton Hall University student Andrea Sirikides in March 1996. The pair began dating and he eventually got engaged to his after six months. A year later, on August 29, 1997, he and his fiancé married in front of family and friends.

With his wife, he has two children - sons Danny Hurley (born July 1999) and Andrew Hurley (born January 30, 2002). Both brothers are athletes and play college basketball.

College Sports

While a high student, Hurley played basketball where his father was a longtime coach. As a senior, he led his team to a No. 2 national ranking. He played five years of college basketball - including a redshirt year.

Coach

From 2001 to 2010, Dan Hurley was a head coach at Saint Benedict's Preparatory School. He has been credited with building the high school team into one of the high school basketball programs in the United States.

For two years, from 2010 to 2012, he worked as the head coach at Wagner College. There he pulled the team to single-season win-loss record at 25–6. 

Hurley went on to become the head coach at the University of Rhode Island from 2012 to 2018 and was able to bring the team to the 2017 and 2018 NCAA tournaments. 

Dan Hurley turned down the offer from the University of Rhode Island to work at the University of Connecticut Huskies. In June 2023, he signed a six-year, $32.1 million contract extension with the university.

In 2024, Dan Hurley was named the Naismith College Coach of the Year and was awarded the Sporting News National Coach of the Year Award.
