Before fame
Ainge was selected by Toronto Blue Jays in baseball's 1977 amateur draft of the Major League Baseball (MBL). On his college baseball career, he had the hit of .220, 2 home runs and 146 hits in 211 games.
After three years with the team, he decided to pursue his career in basketball.

Played for
In the 1981 NBA draft, he was chosen by the Boston Celtics. While on the team, he played against Atlanta Hawks, Houston Rockets, among others. In 1989, he was traded to Sacramento Kings and to Portland Trail Blazers in 1990.
Danny Ainge became a free agent after the 1991–92 season and soon signed contract with Phoenix Suns on July 1, 1992, which was his first day as a free agent. He retired the 1994–95 season. In 1999 he was inducted into the Oregon Sports Hall of Fame.

After retirement
Since retiring, he has worked as head coach of the Phoenix Suns in 1996, Executive Director of Basketball Operations for Boston Celtics in 2003, and as a commentator for the NBA on TNT. He became the general manager of Boston Celtics in April 2017.
In May 2019 it was reported that he had a mild heart attack and is recovering from it. This is his second heart attack, his first being in 2009.
