Dermot Kennedy’s birth took place on 13 December 1991 in Rathcoole, County Dublin, Ireland. He was born Dermot Joseph Kennedy to his mother Eileen Kennedy and his father John Kennedy, who is of European descent. His dad’s sister is an RTE broadcaster, Mary Kennedy. He was raised alongside his sibling, a sister named Claire.

Kennedy started playing guitar at the age of 10 and songwriting at the age of 14. His parents were supportive of his choice to pursue a career in music. His father frequently drove him to Dublin to perform at open mic nights while his mother applied for his position to study classical music at the National University of Ireland, where he studied for three years.

His aunt, Mary Kennedy, is a TV personality and former newscaster.

Kennedy won the South County Song contest, which catapulted him to stardom. Finally, in early 2016, his single went viral on Spotify Discover Weekly. On the platform, he published his work for several years and that of his band, Shadows and Dust.

Dermot Kennedy has also performed in numerous festivals, including Bonnaroo Music Festival, South by Southwest Festival, Austin City Limits Music Festival, and Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival.
