Diarmaid Murtagh was born on July 28, 1982, in Kingscourt, Republic of Ireland. His father’s name is Noel Murtagh who turned 80 in December 2020 while his mother’s name is not known to the public, although he often features her on his social media. 

He is not the only child of his parents and has four siblings- older brother Cian Murtagh, Dara Murtagh, and older sisters Aisling Murtagh, Triona Murtagh, and Michelle Murtagh.

After graduating from college, he went on to work in theaters such as Abbey Theatre. He eventually made his debut screen debut in an episode of the TV series Ros na Rún in the year 2007.

This was followed by appearances in episodes of the TV series Seacht (2008), The Roaring Twenties (2008), The Clinic (2008-2009), Camelot (2011), Rásaí na Gaillimhe (2009-2012), among others. Finally, in 2013, he was cast as Leif in six episodes of the TV series Vikings which is considered his breakthrough role.
