In 2002 he competed in the TV game show Jeopardy!, which was then hosted by Alex Trebek. Rao was able to win $34,400 on the show.

His debut appearance was in an episode of the TV series Standoff (2006). This was followed by appearances in an appearance of TV series Brothers & Sisters (2008), and in the film Drag Me to Hell. Finally, his first role was in the 2009 film Avatar as Dr. Max Patel.
