Gypsy Rose Blanchard’s mother Clauddine "Dee Dee" Blanchard suffered from a mental illness called Munchausen syndrome by proxy. In this form of child abuse, the caretaker makes up fake symptoms or causes real symptoms to make it look like the child is suffering from disease.

Gypsy began being her mother’s victim when she was an infant. At three months old, her mother was convinced that she had sleep apnea and was taken to the hospital but infant Gypsy Rose Blanchard was discharged after monitoring.

Her mother claimed that she had muscular dystrophy and made her use a walker. After a minor motorcycle accident when Gypsy was 7 or 8 years old, which resulted in a minor knee abrasion, Dee Dee made her use a wheelchair.
