Hoji Fortuna’s birth took place on 4 September 1974 in Luanda, Angola. There are no details of his mother, father, siblings, or what his parents did for a living. He emigrated to Portugal at the age of 20.

Although he studied law, he eventually took up acting in early 2001 as a comedy actor after winning a reality show in Portugal. In 2008, he and his partner (now wife) Anja Mutic, who is a travel writer, moved from Lisbon to New York.
