Smith’s debut screen role was in the 2012 film Trigger Finger. This was followed by minor appearances in the TV series Miss Guidance (2014), The Thundermans (2014-2015), and in the 2015 film Paper Towns.

Finally, he was cast as Ezekiel 'Books' Figuero in the TV series The Get Down. He portrayed the character for a total of 11 episodes, from 2016 to 2017, and is considered his breakthrough role.
