Early Days
Kate Martin began playing basketball at the age of 5. Her father also coached her and she played in local recreational leagues and played pickup at the YMCA. While in elementary school, she played tackle football but later took up volleyball.
In middle school, Martin began attending Iowa basketball camps every summer and eventually joined her local Amateur Athletic Union basketball program.
Throughout high school, she played for Blue Star St. Louis (now called Napheesa Collier Elite).
High School, College
While a high school student, she played for the Edwardsville High School basketball team and won four regional titles as well as runner-up in the tournament. Her average was 16.2 points, 5.9 rebounds, 2.88 assists, and 2.13 steals per game.
In addition to basketball, Kate Martin also was a varsity volleyball as an outside hitter at Edwardsville for four years. In her senior year, she was named to the All-SWC first team.
While a sophomore in high school, she was recruited by NCAA Division I basketball programs and was recruited by the Iowa Hawkeyes women’s basketball team in her junior year.
After joining the University of Iowa on a full athletic scholarship, Kate Martin was redshirted for the 2018-19 season due to an ACL tear. She was named the team captain for the 2020-21 season and won the Iowa Big Ten Sportsmanship Award from 2021 to 2023.
WNBA
Martin was declared for the 2024 WNBA draft. While attending to support her Iowa teammate, Caitlin Clark, who was selected as the first pick overall in the draft, she too was selected from the audience.
Las Vegas Aces picked Kate Martin in the second round as the eighteenth overall pick of the 2024 WNBA draft.
