Holdbrook-Smith’s interest in acting started when he was 15 years old but was reluctant to reveal it to his parents because it “didn't seem allowed.” He eventually decided to pursue acting when he was 18 years old.

His debut screen role was in an episode of the TV series Judge John Deed, which was aired in 2002. This was followed by minor roles in the episodes of the TV series Judge John Deed (2002), Little Britain (2004), According to Bex (2005), Mike Bassett: Manager (2005), Star Stories (2006-2008), Taking the Flak (2009), Whites (2010), among others.
