Laila Robins’ birth took place on March 14, 1959, in St. Paul, Minnesota, USA. Her father’s name is Jānis Robiņš, who worked as a research chemist, and her mother’s name is Brigita Robins. She is not the only child of her Latvian American parents and has three siblings- sisters Zaiga Robins, Baiba Robins, and Daina Robins.
After graduation from Murray High School, Robins went on to enroll at the University of Wisconsin–Eau Claire where she received her undergraduate degree. She went on to study at Yale School of Drama and earned a master of fine arts from the same.

After graduation, Robins began working in theaters. Her early roles were in the off-broadway theatre production of The Real Thing (1985), Summer and Smoke (1986), Bloody Poetry (1987), The Lady from the Sea (1988), Maids of Honor (1990), The Merchant of Venice (1995).
The broadway theatre productions in which Laila Robins has worked include The Herbal Bed (1998), Frozen (2004), etc. Other off-broadway Tiny Alice (2000), Burnt Piano (2001), Antony and Cleopatra (2002), King John (2003), A Street Car Named Desire (2008), to name a few.
Alongside working in theatre, she also pursued a career in TV as well as films. Her debut screen role was in the 1987 film Planes, Trains, and Automobiles as Susan Page. This was followed by appearances in the films Live Nude Girls (1995), The Blood Oranges (1997), Oxygen (1999), Happy End (2003), A Broken Sole (2006), Multiple Sarcasms (2010), Grey Lady (2015), Impossible Monsters (2017), etc and TV film Spenser: Small Vices (1999).
