Raised by a single mother, the family’s financial situation was not stable. Being a single teen mom, his mother struggled to put food on the table. After years of moving from apartment to apartment, searching for a more stable job, his mother finally decided she could no longer fulfill the basic needs of her only son.

“They made me get up every day and go to school. There were days I didn't want to go to school. Being part of a family, a mom-and-dad surrounding … you had a brother and you had two sisters … it was an unbelievable experience for me at a young age. It opened my eyes up to become what I am today, why I act the way I am today.”

While he was in the sixth grade, the Walkers helped his mother to get an apartment. James then moved back with his mother, while still living with the Walkers on the weekends.
