Early Career

Malik McDowell had a successful high school football career. He was rated by Rivals.com as a five-star recruit, the second-best defensive end in his class, and 26th best player overall. 

At  Michigan State University, McDowell played college football under head coach Mark Dantonio. In 2015 he was named an All-American by Fox Sports and on November 29, 2016, was named Second Team All-Big Ten.

It was announced on December 5, 2016, that Malik McDowell had signed with an agent. He entered the 2017 NFL Draft and received an invitation to the NFL Combine. There he completed every combine drill but was not able to complete the short shuttle and three-cone drill.

Malik McDowell also attended nine private workouts and visited several NFL teams. ESPN and NFL analyst Bucky Brooks ranked him as the top defensive tackle available in the draft. He was also ranked the third-best interior defensive lineman by NFL Media analyst Mike Mayock.

Professional Career

In the 2017 NFL Draft, Malik McDowell was selected by Seattle Seahawks in the second round (35th overall). In May of the same year, he signed a four-year, $6.95 million, $4.40 million guaranteed, and the bonus of $3.19 million contract with Seattle Seahawks.

In 2017 he was placed on the non-football injury list due to the injuries from the ATV accident. And on July 26, 2018, he was placed on the non-football injury designation followed by the reserve/non-football injury list the next day.

But he never played a professional game with the Seattle Seahawks and was officially released on March 2, 2019.

In July 2017 Malik McDowell was involved in an ATV accident and was on the reserve by Seattle Seahawks. 

In February 2019 he got into a scuffle with local police. According to reports, police had stopped his car for over-speeding. Malik McDowell was charged with 2 counts of felony assaulting and resisting, 1 misdemeanor count of operating while intoxicated, and one misdemeanor of driving on a suspended license.

McDowell’s blood samples showed that he had a BAC of .189, which is two times the legal limit. He was sentenced to 11 months in jail.
