Jakobson who worked as a financier at the Wall Street Stock Exchange and her mother is Marie Squerciati, an academic and writer known for her work in TV from the 1970s to 1980s.
Her parents were never married and although she was born out of wedlock, her father paid for her nanny, child support, and tuition at Dalton and Northwestern University. The information about her father was only available to the public in 2019 after John, who died of pneumonia in 2017, tried to unsuccessfully include Marina Squerciati in his will.
From her paternal side, she has four half-siblings- sisters Maggie Wheeler (born 1961) who is also an actress, Jenna who works as a songwriter and country music artist, and brothers John (born 1964, died 2004), and Nicholas.

After graduating from Flintridge Sacred Heart Academy, Squerciati went on to attend Northwestern University. She graduated from the same in 2003 with a Bachelor of Science degree in theater.

Marina Squerciati’s interest in acting and theatre grew from a young age. Following college education, she performed in Lucille Lortel Theatre’s off-Broadway play Just in Time: The Judy Holliday Story and other plays such as Manipulation, and Beauty of the Father. Her Broadway debut was in a theatre production of Ernst Lubitsch's To Be or Not to Be, which was directed by Casey Nicholaw- a Tony Award winner.
