Early Days

Despite studying to become an English teacher, Mary Beth Barone changed her mind in her sophomore year. She dropped out of college, moved to Chinatown at the age of 20. She worked for eyewear startup Warby Parker for four years.

Barone changed her career path to work at a pre-launch health and wellness startup in mobile app development. Meanwhile, she joined the Upright Citizens Brigade’s core improv curriculum.

She eventually moved to New York City, cashed out her 401k to make a comedy web series while working odd jobs until it became her full-time job.

Mary Beth Barone met fellow comedian Benito “Benny” Skinner at a comedy show in Bushwick and became good friends. They went on to start the podcast Ride together, which eventually led to Overcompensating. The semi-autobiographical show revolves around Benny’s college journey as a closeted gay guy.

Over the years, Mary Beth Barone has appeared in short films, Mary Beth’s Sex Tape (2017), Supernigga (2022), The Anne Frank Gift Shop (2023), Greta Gerwig (2024), and in the film Sugar Baby (2024).
