Ncuti Gatwa’s birth took place on 15 October 1992 in Kigali, Rwanda. His full name is Mizero Ncuti Gatwa, his father Tharcisse Gatwa is a journalist with a Ph.D. in theology while the name of his mother who is believed to be a homemaker is not known to the public. He is the only child of his parents and has no siblings.

The Gatwa family escaped from the Rwandan genocide against the Tutsi in 1994 to Scotland where they lived in Edinburgh and Dunfermline.
