Nija Charles – Family Inspiration
Her father worked as a D.J. while her mother is a dancer. She is not the second generation in her family to be a musician. Her grandmother was in a choir while her uncle and aunt produce.
So, Nija Charles started playing musical instruments from an early age. She shared that her mother was the one who made both her and her sibling, sister Zoe, learn to play at least one musical instrument. Recalling, she said,
“My mom made it mandatory in our house that my sister and I had to learn one instrument. I started off playing the flute in third grade. I'm a short girl and I had short fingers, but I didn't really want to play the flute at first — I wanted to play the saxophone.
But because my fingers were so small, I had to play the flute instead. I just wanted to learn to play all different instruments. I learned to play the piano a little bit by ear.”
When she was around 7 years old, she saw her uncle and aunt produce music with Fruity Loops. Inspired, she hassled them until she got to try it herself.
At the age of 13, she asked her mom for a mini keyboard so that she could produce. Her mom agreed on one condition- she needed to bring straight A’s. Nija Charles delivered the A’s and soon was “banging” on the piano. She then turned to songwriting. At college she was making beats from her dorm room.
