Ray William Johnson is an actor, comedian, YouTuber, content creator by profession, and American by nationality. He is the creator of the production studio Equals Three (=3) and the animated series Your Favourite Martian.

Ray William Johnson’s birth took place on August 14, 1981, in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, USA. His biological father, who was an abusive drug addict, left his mother and a year-old Ray. So, his single mother and his grandparents were the ones who raised him through financial difficulty. He also has a half-sister from his father’s side.

Growing up, Johnson loved to draw comics, and while in high school he wrote scripts by hand as the family could not afford a computer. At the age of 13, he went to live with his father. After seeing how his father physically abused his half-sister and his own girlfriend, Ray William Johnson realized his father was a bad influence. So, he returned to live with his mother after a couple of months.

When Johnson was 17 years old, his father forged his signature and retrieved all money from his bank account. He had been saving around $2,500 to pay for his junior year in college. After graduating from Norman North High School in 1999, he attended junior college and had to wait tables. Later he went to Columbia University School of General Studies on a partial scholarship to study history and his grandma was the one who helped him with some money. His ultimate goal was to earn a law degree.

While a college student, Ray William Johnson began to watch YouTube vlogs, so he decided to make a YouTube channel in his dorm room. He talked about his daily life in his videos. He eventually opened a second YouTube channel and he introduced equals three ( =3 ) series where he added hilarious comments to viral videos. His channel became the first to reach 5 million subscribers and 2 billion total views. 

As Johnson’s popularity grew, he began to land sponsorships and partnerships. He partnered with Maker Studios in 2011 and produced a Spanish-language version of Igual a Tres. He also started a side channel called Your Favorite Martian, a band series with animated music videos. However, just a year later, Ray William Johnson decided to walk away from Maker Studios after he was allegedly pressured to sign a contract that would give up 40% of his earnings from the series and 50% of his intellectual property.

In November 2021, he founded his own production studio, Equals Three Studios where he continued to produce Equals Three. In March 2014, his last show as a host on Equals Three was published, saying he left to focus on other projects. The show continued with new hosts. He made his comeback to YouTube in 2020 and since then has gained over 12 million subscribers.
