Richard Hammond – Controversy

Hammond has sparked several controversies around him such as him being Xenophobic and Homophobic.

In the 16th series of Top Gear, the second episode he said that no one would ever want to own a Mexican car, since cars are supposed to reflect national characteristics and so a Mexican car would be "lazy, feckless, flatulent, overweight, leaning against a fence, asleep, looking at a cactus with a blanket with a hole in the middle on as a coat."

He went on to add "I'm sorry, but can you imagine waking up and remembering you're Mexican?!"

In December 2016, Hammond stirred controversy after a homophobic remark in season one, episode 6 of the series The Grand Tour. His co-presenter Jeremy Clarkson joked "the only problem is that in one of those, you couldn't enjoy a chocolate Magnum ice cream" to which Richard Hammond replied "It's all right, I don't eat ice cream. It's something to do with being straight."

In 2017, he provided his explanation on the subject saying, "Look, anyone who knows me knows I wasn’t being serious, that I’m not homophobic. Love is love, whatever the sex of the two people in love... It may be because I live in a hideously safe and contained middle-class world, where a person’s sexuality is not an issue,”

He went on, “ But when I hear of people in the media coming out, I think, why do they even feel the need to mention it? It is so old-fashioned to make a big deal of it. That isn't even an interesting thing to say at a dinner party anymore".
