He was born Rory Michael Kinnear to his father Roy Kinnear and his mother Carmel Cryan, who are both famous actors. His father died when he was just 10 years old, and he started acting as a way of getting to know him.

He is not the only child of his parents and has two siblings- sisters, Kirsty Kinnear and Karina Kinnear. He also has other famous family members. His grandfather is Scottish international rugby union and rugby league player Roy Kinnear.
