Who is Selma Blair?

Selma Blair is an American actress who has been in the film industry since 1995. Her most notable work is Hellboy (2004), and Hellboy II: The Golden Army (2008).

Selma Blair’s birth took place on June 23, 1972, in Southfield, Michigan, USA. She was born Selma Blair Beitner to parents Molly Ann (Cooke), a judge, and Elliot I. Beitner, a lawyer. She was raised along with her three older siblings, sisters Marie Beitner, Katherine Beitner, and Elizabeth Beitner.

For education, Selma Blair attended Hillel Day School and later a high school in Michigan. Hoping to be a photographer, she joined Kalamazoo College but was “bit” by the “acting bug”. So, at the age of 20, she moved to New York. There she attended New York University (NYU) as well as joined acting classes at the Stella Adler Conservatory.

Selma Blair transferred to the University of Michigan and graduated magna cum laude from the same with a bachelor of fine arts in photography, a bachelor of arts in psychology, and a double major in fine arts and English. The year was 1994.

Selma Blair – Boyfriend, Husband, Children, Divorce

Blair lost her childhood sweetheart in 1990. He was just 18 when he died in an accident. 

Years later, she began to date Ahmet Zappa, a writer, and a producer. Zappa is the son of Gail Zappa and musician Frank Zappa. On January 24, 2004, the couple married at Carrie Fisher’s Beverly Hills home. But only two years later, on June 21, 2006, she filed for divorce from her soon-to-be ex-husband citing irreconcilable differences. The divorce was finalized in December 2006.

Selma Blair found love with Mikey Day, her Kath and Kim co-star. They were in a relationship starting in 2008 but were broken up by 2010. She went on to date fashion designer Jason Bleick.

In January 2011, it was announced that she was pregnant with her first child and the child’s father is, in fact, her boyfriend Bleick. Their son Arthur Saint Bleick was born on July 27, 2011. The couple never married and broke up in September 2012.

She dated Josh Groban in 2010, Johnny Messner from 2006 to 2008, Jason Schwartzman in 2001, and Ron Carlson. She was in a romantic relationship with David Price, a producer, and had been dating since May 2018. 

In February 2020 it was reported that she had rekindled her romance with boyfriend Ronald Carlson. However, the couple broke up, and in February 2022, they even filed restraining orders against each other, and Blair was granted a temporary restraining order against Carlson after an alleged physical altercation. Both their mutual restraining orders were dropped in September 2022.

Selma Blair – Career

Before fame

Blair’s first acting role was in the 1990 production of T.S. Eliot’s Murder in the Cathedral. The drama was a failure but her teacher encouraged and advised her not to give up. Eventually, in the early 1990s, she was discovered by an agent in acting class. She signed with the agent but struggled to find roles.

Finally, after 75 tireless auditions, she landed an advertising contract for a television spot ad for a theater in Virginia. For the part, she also received Screen Actor's Guild membership. It was followed by a series of commercials before finally securing a professional role in 1995’s The Adventures of Pete & Pete. 

After a series of minor roles in films, she landed her breakthrough role in 1999’s Cruel Intentions.

Following the breakthrough role and MTV Movie Award nomination for Best Breakthrough Performance, Selma Blair has starred in films including Legally Blonde (2001), The Sweetest Thing (2002), Storytelling (2001), A Guy Thing (2003),  Hellboy (2004),  Feast of Love (2007), The Poker House (2008), Dark Horse (2011), Mothers and Daughters (2016),  Mom and Dad (2017).

In the arena of TV series, Blair has acted in Kath & Kim (2008–2009),  Anger Management (2012–2014), and American Crime Story (2016). She has narrated an audiobook, The Diary of Anne Frank, which earned her the Grammy Award for Best Spoken Word Album for Children
