Who is Thuso Mbedu?

Thuso Medbu is a successful South African actress. She has played in the movies Generations: The Legacy (2018), Saints and Sinners (2014), and Scandal (2015-2017). She was known as the first South African actress to lead in Hollywood TV series. She has her sister. Her full name is Thuso Nokwanda Mbedu.

Thuso Medbu's birth took place on July 8, 1991, in Pietermaritzburg, South Africa. 

Thuso Medbu was 4 years old when her Zulu mother, Gladness, passed away due to a brain tumor. Before Thuso Mbedu was born, her mother was already separated from her father, of Xhosa and Sotho descent. After her mother passed away, she was raised by her grandmother, Thokozile, who was also her legal guardian.

Thuso Mbedu did not have a good relationship with her father. After her mother passed away, her father passed away in 2012. In a short time period, her grandmother passed away in 2013. About her sibling, she has one sister who is very close to her. Her sister’s name is Masentle Nomalungelo Mbedu.

For education, she attended the University of Witwatersrand. There, she studied Physical Theatre and Performing Arts Management and graduated with honors. She also went on to attend the Stella Adler Studio of Acting in New York, USA.

Her ethnicity is African (Zulu, Xhosa, Sotho).

Early Days

After her studies, Thuso did not have any kind of job for six months. In 2014, she had a small role in the second season of Mazansi Magic soapie Isibaya. Thuso became known for her famous role in the telenovela Is Thunzi.

Thuso started her first starring role on television in the Mzansi Magic teen drama series IsThunzi, which premiered in October 2016. Her breakthrough film was IsThunzi (2016-2017), for which she was nominated for an Emmy Award.
