Who is Wil Johnson?

Wil Johnson is an actor by profession and British by nationality. He is well known for appearing in the TV series Waking the Dead, Babyfather, TV series House of the Dragon, Emmerdale, and the stage play Othello.

Wil Johnson was born on 18 April 1965 in Muswell Hill, London, England as Wilbert Charles Johnson. His father worked for UPS while his mother was a dressmaker as well as a stock investor. It is unclear if he is the only child of his parents or if he grew up alongside siblings.

Education, Ethnicity

For education, Wil Johnson attended the Mountview Drama School in Crouch End, London after his interest in music grew after filling in for an absent drummer in primary school. He later went to the National Youth Theatre for three years. Also, he joined a drama group at the Haringey Theater where he learned ballet, contemporary dancing, and break dancing.

His ethnicity includes Jamaican and English.

Wil Johnson married his longtime girlfriend Alexandra Spiegel in 2001. Spiegel is a model and a writer. With his wife, he has three biological children- son Joachim River (JJ), twin daughters Rain and Zillah-May, and a stepdaughter named Mischa. His marriage to Spiegel ended in divorce in 2010.

Johnson went on to date and eventually married his girlfriend Camilla Johnson on 4 December 2014. He has three more children but the mother of his other children is unconfirmed. Another daughter of his is Ayanna Witter-Johnson, who is now a composer, singer, songwriter, and cellist.

Early Life

Although Johnson was a student at drama school, he had no interest in acting as he had a speech impediment and suffered panic attacks regularly. However, after he filled in for a role, he changed his mind and eventually began his career as an actor.

Wil Johnson’s debut screen role was in a 1987 episode of the TV series Casualty as Paul. This was followed by minor roles in the episodes of the TV series London's Burning (1988), Anna Lee (1994), Cracker (1994-1995), etc. Finally, he was cast as Detective Sergeant Spencer Jordan in the police crime drama series Waking the Dead. He portrayed the character from 2000 to 2011 in a total of 92 episodes and is considered his breakthrough role.

Since then he has starred in the films Hidden Treasure (2000), Adulthood (2008), In a Better World (2010), Pimp (2010), Anuvahood (2011), Dead End (2012), Dumar (2013), Macbeth (2018), The Strangers (2019), Rotten (2023), 'Michael' - The Michael Watson Story, to name a few. 

In addition, Wil Johnson has also portrayed characters in the episodes of the TV series Clocking Off (2000-2002), Waterloo Road (2010-2011), Holby City (2011-2013), Emmerdale Farm (2012-2014), The Five (2016), Ransom's Law (2017), Outlander (2017-2020), The Larkins (2021), House of the Dragon (2022) as Ser Vaemond Velaryon, among others.
