Ruhian began training in the traditional martial art Pencak silat at the age of 13. Marital art was later known as Pencak Silat Tenaga Dasar. He eventually became a trainer and a referee which disqualified him from participating in tournaments.  

In the mid-2000s, he taught Pencak silat in European countries such as Belgium, France, and the Netherlands and also worked as a hand-to-hand instructor for the Indonesian National Police.

A change in his career path came in 2008 when he was asked by Welsh director, action choreographer, and screenwriter Gareth Evans to help in his film Merantau, which was released in 2009.
