Yoenis Céspedes’ birth took place on October 18, 1985, in Campechuela, Granma Province, Cuba. He was born Yoenis Céspedes Milanés to his mother Estela Milanés, a softball pitcher who appeared in the 2000 Summer Olympics for Cuba, and his father Cresencio Céspedes, a former Cuban League catcher. 

But his parents separated when he was only a year old. And at the age of 10, his mother sent him to a state-run school so that he could focus on baseball. He also has a half-sibling, a younger half-brother named Yoelqui Céspedes, also a baseball player.

In the Cuban team

Céspedes started his career with Alazanes de Granma during the 2003–04 Cuban National Series. For the 2004–05 season, he batted .313/.403/.540 and in the 2005–06 season, he played 88 games hitting .351/.444/.649 with 23 home runs, 89 runs, and 78 runs batted in (RBI). 

His performance was similar in the 2006–2007 season, producing a .303/.402/.541 rate with 17 home runs and 79 runs in 89 games. The following season his hit was .284/.342/.552. 

In 2009, Yoenis Céspedes was the starting center fielder for Cuba in World Baseball Classic and Baseball World Cup. In the 2010 World University Baseball Championship, Céspedes played for six games and went 11 for 22 with 12 runs, 14 RBI, two doubles, and four homers. The same year he played in the 2010 Intercontinental Cup.

In the summer of 2011, Yoenis Céspedes left Cuba and headed to the USA. In January 2012, he bypassed the MLB draft and became an unrestricted free agent.

On February 13, 2012, he signed a 4-year, $36 million contract with the Oakland Athletics and made his Major League Baseball (MLB) debut on March 28, 2012. He played for the team until 2014 and was traded to Boston Red Sox on July 31, 2014.

Just months later on December 11, 2014, Yoenis Céspedes was again traded to Detroit Tigers.

Yoenis Céspedes played for the New York Mets from 2015 through 2018. In 2017, he signed a four-year, $110 million contract with the New York Mets with a $27.5 million Average Annual Value.

On May 20, 2019, it was reported that he had fractured his right ankle on his ranch which will put him on the injured list for the 2019 season. In 2017 he suffered hamstring and quadriceps ailments and in 2018 he had a  right hip flexor strain.
