A former Miss Teen Universe has died on March 6, 2019, after suffering a fatal heart attack on a ski trip in Westendorf in February 2019. She was 20.
Van Der Zee, who is from Holland was on a holiday in Westendorf, Austria with her family. She was crowned the winner of the beauty pageant in 2017.
Her parents wrote via her Instagram,
"Our pearl, our everything passed away on Wednesday evening March 6th at 22:47. It is incredibly surreal that our dearly beloved Lotte is not around us anymore. Our hearts are truly broken. We would like to thank you all again for all the support and heartwarming messages."
The parents also shared that the beauty queen had been out with friends the night before and had returned "cheerfully and without health complaints."
But the next morning she had not appeared for breakfast. So, they had gone to check on her and had found her ill in bed and later that day her sickness "swiftly escalated in sudden cardiac arrest".
Lotte van der Zee was resuscitated by her mother and rushed to a nearby hospital. There she was placed in a medically induced coma. She was then transferred to a specialist hospital in Munich but soon her organs started failing her one by one. Her mother Eugenie told Dutch paper De Limburger,
“We were already told that we had to take into account the worst, but you cling to hope. Last Monday we saw that this hope faded. Lotte was up, you could see that. The last days Lotte's organs started to go, while no more brain activity was measured.
It started with her kidneys. She was then put on kidney dialysis, which kept her alive. But when it became clear on Wednesday that it would not be okay, she was taken off the machine. We had to let her go. It could not be otherwise. It was good like that; she has had to endure a lot in the past few days.”
Two weeks into a medically induced coma, the young model was taken off life support on 7th March 2019.
Since winning the title in 2017, she had been working actively as a model while sharing the snaps of her glamorous life on social media such as Instagram.
Her family has further added that tests are being carried out to determine what caused their daughter’s heart attack.
