Instagram fitness star Odalis Santos Mena, 23, dies after botched surgery to fix constant sweating

Last Modified: 9th Sep

Mexican social media influencer Odalis Santos Mena tragically passed away on July 7 after undergoing a botched surgery intended for antiperspirant treatment called MiraDry. She was 23.

Mena, who often uploaded pics of her ripped physique to her 147k followers, was recruited by the SkinPiel clinic to promote a breakthrough antiperspirant treatment called MiraDry.

The treatment is supposed to combat excess underarm sweat by using heat energy to remove sweat glands and thus reduce body odor and lessen armpit hair. However, the endorsement went tragically wrong after she suffered a cardiac arrest following anesthesia administration.  Odalis Santos Mena died shortly after as the clinic’s employees were unable to revive her via CPR.

The late influencer had promoted MiraDry on social media with assurances that the “no sweat” treatment was safe and effective.

Police have launched an investigation to look into her death with reports claiming that she died due to negligence from the anesthesia – and that the anesthesia was administered by someone who wasn’t a trained anesthesiologist.

On the other hand, SkinPiel clinical - which is located in Guadalajara has tallied her death to a combination of the anesthesia and a steroid Mena was taking. It further added that it was unaware of Mena’s steroid use at the time.

Mena’s boyfriend Victor Gomez Carreno, who is a certified trainer in men’s physique, wrote on his private Instagram account, “Your actions in life, echo in eternity. I will take you with me forever short, it makes no sense to write here what I feel in my heart @odalis_sm, I love you.”

The young musclewoman frequently took part in bodybuilding competitions and won the 2019 Miss and Mr. Hercules title as well as the Wellness Fitness Juvenile contest. She was also a student, studying to earn a degree in nutrition.
