Prince Harry renounces British residency!
Prince Harry has listed the United States of American as his primary residence.
The royal recently updated his housing records – citing “New Country/State Usually Resident” is now as the US. He severed his ties to the British royals in 2020.
According to documents obtained the Daily Mail, he filed the papers on Wednesday but listed the “date of change” as June 29, 2023.
The Duke of Sussex and his wife Meghan Markle officially moved out of their home in the UK on June 28, 2023. Just three months prior King Charles had evicted them from the Frogmore Cottage, where ex-royals lived.
It remains unclear if the move of renouncing his British residency will impact any of his royal titles.
In December 2023, Harry explained that despite the legal change he he still considered the UK to be his “home.” However, he revealed that he felt he was “forced” to flee to the United States due to safety concerns.
Amid his legal battle for taxpayer-funded police security – which has since been denied – the Duke released a statement, “The UK is central to the heritage of my children and a place I want them to feel at home as much as where they live at the moment in the US. That cannot happen if it’s not possible to keep them safe when they are on UK soil.”
Prince Harry has since expressed his interest in getting his American citizenship.
In a February appearance on Good Morning America, Harry revealed, “The American citizenship is a thought that has crossed my mind, but certainly is not something that is a high priority for me right now.”
Since leaving the royal family in 2020, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle have lived in California with their two children – Archie, 4, and Lilibet, 2.
“It’s amazing. I love every single day,” he shared of living in the United States.
Since the revelation of the use of drugs in his memoir Spare, some legal experts have argued that it may cause his visa to be revoked while others claimed that his status in the US isn’t at high risk – until he gets into legal issues.
Another issue is if Harry would have to renounce his royal titles to obtain American citizenship.
Per the policy called “Renunciation of Title or Order of Nobility,” the royal may be required to no longer be referenced as such.
“Any applicant who has any titles of heredity or positions of nobility in any foreign state must renounce the title or the position. The applicant must expressly renounce the title in a public ceremony and USCIS must record the renunciation as part of the proceedings,” the policy states.
