Alexandra Maria Lara was born on 12 November 1978 in Bucharest, Romania. Her birth name is Alexandra Maria Platareanu and is known by her nickname Alex. She is the only child of her parents Valentin Platareanu (father), an actor, and Doina Platareanu (mother).

The family fled to West Germany in 1983 to escape Nicolae Ceauşescu's regime in Communist Romania. They had planned to emigrate to Canada but later settled in Freiburg im Breisgau, Baden-Württemberg before moving to Germany’s capital Berlin.

Alexandra Maria Lara graduated from Französisches Gymnasium Berlin in 1997 and went on to study acting under the management of her father who was also the co-founder of the Theaterwerkstatt Charlottenburg. She graduated from the same in 2000.
