Oxenbould began his career as an actor in the 1980s. His debut role was in the 1980 film Fatty Finn as Hubert "Fatty" Finn. This was followed by roles in the films Mortgage (1989), The Crossing (1990), Radiance (1998), etc. During this time he had appearances in an episode of the TV series E Street and Home and Away, both in 1989.

Over the years Ben Oxenbould has starred in the main role in the short-lived TV series Hey Dad..! (1991-1994) and The Cut (2009). He has also had a recurring role in Slide (2011), The Kettering Incident (2016), The Code (2016), Deep Water (2016), and guest appearances in Rake (2012), Wolf Creek (2017), and Mr. Inbetween (2019), etc.

He is also a philanthropist. In 2000 he helped set up the BBAS Memorial School in Bardia, Nepal, and has been continuously working to support the school. In 2005 he organized a fundraiser for the school which featured singers Tex Perkins and Tim Rogers, and comedian Akmal Saleh while artwork by the school's students was auctioned.
