Who is Birgit Wetzinger?
Birgit Wetzinger is a former flight attendant who worked for Austrian Airlines. She is best known for being the second wife of late formula one racer Nikki Lauda and for saving the life of Lauda in 2005 by donating a kidney.

Wetzinger and Nikki Lauda had begun dating in 2004. She was Lauda’s flight attendant on his budget airline Flyniki and also 30 years his junior.

And just eight months after the 26-year-old Birgit Wetzinger began a relationship with 56-year-old Lauda, his kidney failed. Lauda’s transplanted kidney which his brother had donated to him in 1997 had failed to function. She saved his life by donating one of her kidneys to him.
Nikki Lauda had told a reporter about his kidney transplant in 2005,
“I asked my son Lucas if he test to donate a kidney, but it did not fit. Birgit then said she would do the test, but I asked 'why would you do the test'? 'Because I want to', she said. I said 'you will never ever donate your kidney, because I'm ill and I've known you for eight [months]'
She did the test, and she did fit. For about three months she gave me always the same impression, 'I do it for you because I love you'. She was never frightened or asked any questions, it was just a pure approach 'I will do it'."
Birgit Wetzinger and Nikki Lauda finally wed on August 25, 2008. Their children, twins Mia Lauda and Max Lauda were born in September 2009. Lauda also said that he married Wetzinger because she was the "right woman to marry" and not because of her selfless sacrifice.
They had a private four-minute wedding, no honeymoon, and the wedding details were never to the public.

Birgit Wetzinger – Husband’s death
Birgit Wetzinger’s husband, Niki Lauda, a three-time Formula One champion passed away on May 20, 2019, at the age of 70. They were married until his death.
His health has been reported to be declining in the past few years. Only last year in 2018 he underwent a lung transplant and earlier this year he was hospitalized with influenza.
Lauda also has two children- sons Mathias Lauda (born on January 30, 1981), also a racer, and Lukas Lauda (born in 1979) from his first marriage to famous model and socialite Marlene Knaus. His other son Christoph Lauda (born in 1982) was born from an extra-marital affair. They divorced in 1991.
