MacDonald began his professional career as an actor in the year 2015. He has been a member of ACTRA since June 2015 and is a Full Union Member of ACTRA Maritimes.

Calem MacDonald’s debut screen role was in an episode of the TV series Mr. D (2016) as Christian at the age of 15. This was followed by minor roles in the film Stage Mother (2020) as Concierge Brody, in the TV Series documentary The Detectives (2020) as Byron Duval, and in three episodes of the TV series Trailer Park Boys (2018) as Kid.

Finally, in 2020, Calem MacDonald was cast as young Dave in the Netflix series The Umbrella Academy. He portrayed the popular character in season two of the series for a total of five episodes.

Since then, he has starred in the film Night Blooms (2021) as Jason, and in 16 episodes of the TV series Moonshine (2021-2022) as Finn Bennett.
