Chris Fischer – Career
Chris Fischer began working as a farmer with family members on the Beetlebung Farm. As his father worked as a commercial fisherman, it was he who taught Fischer how to fish and farm.
While in his twenties, Fischer worked as a sous chef at Mario Batali's restaurant Babbo. He had actually met Batali through actor Jake Gyllenhaal. He has also been the chef of other restaurants like The River Café, St John Bread and Wine, and Alice Waters’ Sustainable Food Project.
In a 2016 interview with BU Today, he said, “I have a nontraditional approach to work. I jumped into the chef world, but without a chefly background and was so focused for the first two and a half years that I taught myself to run Babbo’s three-star kitchen when I was 25.”
Chris Fischer then returned to Martha’s Vineyard to cook privately. He landed the opportunity to work at Beach Plum Inn & Restaurant as the executive chef. At the Beach Plum, for his work as Chef, he was awarded the Coastal New England Rising Star Award and even had the opportunity to serve Barack Obama and Michelle Obama.
In 2015, along with Catherine Young, chef Fischer published the book The Beetlebung Farm Cookbook: A Year of Cooking on Martha’s Vineyard. The book earned him the prestigious James Beard Award.
Chris Fischer now runs the family farm, Beetlebung Farm while also working as the executive chef at Beach Plum Inn & Restaurant, and an instructor in MET’s Programs in Food & Wine.

"I knew from the beginning that my husband's brain was a little different than mine. My husband was diagnosed with what used to be called Asperger's. He has autism spectrum disorder. He's on the spectrum.
"And once he was diagnosed, it dawned on me how funny it was, because all of the characteristics that make it clear that he's on the spectrum are all of the reasons that I fell madly in love with him. That's the truth."
