Daryl Mitchell was born on July 16, 1965, in The Bronx, New York, USA, and raised in Wyandanch. His full name is Daryl Maurice Mitchell. His mother worked as a secretary while his father worked as a bus driver. He is not the only child of his parents and has four siblings, among which is the second. From his father’s other relationships, he has eight other half-siblings, totaling 13 siblings (including Daryl).

At the beginning of his career, Mitchell was a member of the hip-hop group Groove B. Chill. He later went on to pursue a career as an actor. This was followed by appearances in the TV series Here and Now (1992), Alex Haley's Queen (1993), and films House Party (1990), House Party 2 (1991), etc.

In 1993 Daryl Mitchell was cast as Dexter Walker in The John Larroquette Show. He portrayed the character for 84 episodes, until 1996.
