Who is David Alvarez?

David Alvarez is an actor, dancer by profession, and Canadian by nationality. He is well known for playing Billy in the Broadway production of Billy Elliot the Musical as well as the film West Side Story.

David Alvarez’s birth took place on May 11, 1994, in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. He was born David Alvarez-Gonzalez to his father David Alvarez-Carbonell, a professor of biology and chemistry, and his mother Yanek, an actress, and director of the theater. 

His parents are of Cuban descent. He is not the only child of his parents and has two siblings- brothers Max Alvarez and Carlos Alvarez. The family had moved to San Diego and Alvarez’s first languages were French and Spanish.

David Alvarez began taking classical ballet at the California Ballet and was awarded a full-merit scholarship to the Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis School at the American Ballet Theatre (ABT). He also trained in classical piano at the 92nd Street Y School of Music with the Recanati-Kaplan merit scholarship. Alvarez also went to Case Western Reserve University.

His ethnicity is Cuban.

College Days, Theatre

While still at ABT, he danced in the plays The Nutcracker, and The Sleeping Beauty, while still continuing to train in ballet. In 2008 he was included in the top 10 young ballet dancers to watch by Dance Spirit Magazine.

Alongside Trent Kowalik and Kiril Kulish, David Alvarez was cast in the Broadway production of Billy Elliot the Musical. He portrayed the role from 2008 to 2010 and in On the Town.

David Alvarez has also been featured on several TV shows Live with Regis and Kelly, The View, CBC News, and Despierta America. After serving in the US Army for two and a half years he returned to theatre. 

In 2018 it was announced that he had been cast in the 2020 film West Side Story as Bernardo.
