Dixon moved to New York City to study at Marymount Manhattan College and the T. Schreiber Studio. After completing his acting course, he began his career in theatre.

In addition to acting, Derek Dixon is also a playwright. He has written numerous full-length plays, including Homewrecker, Red Snow, Pictures of People, Work of Art, and Green Light. After joining Working Title Playwrights in 2015, he has workshopped the play When Things Are Lost, which premiered in the 2016 Essential Theatre Play Festival.

Derek Dixon’s debut screen role was in the TV series Ruthless as Dale. Between 2020 and 2021, he appeared in two episodes of the TV show.

Derek Dixon – Sexual assault

In June 2025, Derek Dixon accused American actor, playwright, filmmaker Tyler Perry of sexual harassment and assault multiple times. He has sued Perry, writer for The Oval, which Dixon stars in, for $260 million.

Dixon claimed in the lawsuit that Perry sexually assaulted him at Perry’s home in January 2020 and June 2021. A month after the first assault, he alleged that he was offered a series regular role.

He also accused Perry of holding authority over the role, implying that his character, Dale, in The Oval would survive if Dixon kept Perry happy.

Derek Dixon’s character, Dale, was shot four times in the chest in the season finale of the TV series.

As a result of the alleged assaults, he claims to have suffered anxiety,  severe depression, stomach pains, and nausea. He also claims to have been diagnosed with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). He eventually left the show, costing him close to $400,000.

Tyler Perry has denied all the claims, while his lawyers called the allegations “fabricated claims.”
