Elias Koteas was born on March 11, 1961, in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. His mother’s name is Theoni Koteas, who worked as a millinery and his father Dimitrios Koteas worked as a mechanic for the Canadian National Railways. His Greek parents raised him alongside his older sister named Maria Koteas.

For education, Elias Koteas attended Centennial Regional High School in Greenfield Park, Quebec, and graduated from the same. He also went to the American Academy of Dramatic Arts in New York, graduating in 1983, and Vanier College in Montreal.

This was followed by appearances in the films Gardens of Stone (1987), Malarek (1989), Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (1990), The Adjuster (1991), Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles III (1993), Exotica (1994), Hit Me (1996), The Thin Red Line (1998), among others, in episodes of TV series Crime Story (1988), TV films Onassis: The Richest Man in the World (1988), Sugartime (1995), Shot in the Heart (2001).

Since 2000, Elias Koteas has portrayed characters in the episode(s) of the TV series Traffic (2004), American Dad! (2005-2006), CSI: NY (2008), Combat Hospital (2011), The Killing (2011), and Goliath (2021), among others.
He has been portraying Alvin "Al" Olinsky in the TV series Chicago Fire (2013-2017), Chicago P.D. (2014-2018), Chicago Med (2016-2018), and Chicago Justice (2017).
