This was followed by appearances in the films Mallrats (1995), Chasing Amy (1997), American History X (1998), Remember the Titans (2000), The Butterfly Effect (2004), and in the TV series Sister, Sister (1995), Third Watch (2004).
Finally, in 2005 he was cast as the main character Randy Hickey in the sitcom My Name Is Earl, which he portrayed for a total of 96 episodes.

Since his breakthrough role, Ethan Suplee has portrayed characters in films The Fountain (2006), Fanboys (2009), The Wolf of Wall Street (2013), The Trust (2016), Motherless Brooklyn (2019), and The Hunt.
