MacKay was a student at The Harrodian School when he was spotted by an acting scout in 2002. He was asked to audition for a role in P.J. Hogan's 2003 film adaptation of Peter Pan.
After attending a workshop George MacKay landed the role of one of the Lost Boys, Curly. This role is also considered his breakthrough role.

Since then, the then child actor went on to star in the films The Thief Lord (2006), Defiance (2008), The Boys Are Back (2009), Sunshine on Leith (2013), For Those in Peril (2013), Captain Fantastic (2016), Where Hands Touch (2018), True History of the Kelly Gang (2019), 1917 (2019), among others.
George MacKay also has had guest appearances on Rose and Maloney (2004), in miniseries Johnny and the Bomb (2006), The Outcast (2015), 11.22.63 (2016) and in TV movie The Old Curiosity Shop (2007), The Best of Men (2012), To Provide All People (2018), etc.
