MacKay to his mother Kim Baker, a costume designer, and Australian father Paul MacKay, who works in lighting/stage management. He is not the only child of his parents and has a sibling, a sister named Daisy Mackay.

MacKay was a student at The Harrodian School when he was spotted by an acting scout in 2002. He was asked to audition for a role in P.J. Hogan's 2003 film adaptation of Peter Pan.
After attending a workshop George MacKay landed the role of one of the Lost Boys, Curly. This role is also considered his breakthrough role.
