Greta Gerwig is an actress, filmmaker by profession, and American by nationality. She is best known for starring in Greenberg, Frances Ha, and directing Lady Bird, Little Women.

Greta Gerwig’s birth took place on August 4, 1983, in Sacramento, California, USA. She was born as Greta Celeste Gerwig to mother Christine Gerwig, an Ob-Gyn nurse, and father Gordon Gerwig, who worked in finance. 

She is not the only child of her parents and has two siblings – an older brother, who is now a landscape architect, and a sister, who works as a manager at the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission.

In March 2019 it was reported that Greta Gerwig welcomed her first child with Baumbach. The date of birth of their son Harold was not confirmed. This is the second child for Baumbach, who has a son from his marriage with actress Jennifer Jason Leigh, which had ended in divorce.

Early Career

Gerwig wanted to pursue a career as a playwright. But as she was not admitted to playwriting MFA programs, she turned to act. During this time, she worked with Joe Swanberg in co-writing and co-directing Hannah Takes the Stairs (2007) and Nights and Weekends (2008). 

In 2010 Greta Gerwig starred in Greenberg followed by an appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live! and an appearance in the 2012 film To Rome with Love. Finally, in 2012 she co-wrote Frances Ha with Noah Baumbach, in which she played the title role. This role gave her mainstream attention.

Since then Greta Gerwig has starred in several films including The Humbling (2014), Maggie's Plan (2015), 20th Century Women (2016), and Isle of Dogs (2018). Moreover, she has co-written and co-produced Mistress America (2015) as well as directed and written Lady Bird (2017), and Little Women (2019).

Also in TV series, she has had guest appearances in Portlandia (2015), The Mindy Project (2016), Saturday Night Live (2017), etc.
