Who is Indira Varma?

Indira Varma is an actress by profession and British by nationality. She is best known for her role in Kama Sutra: A Tale of Love, Paranoid, and as Ellaria Sand in Game of Thrones.

Indira Varma’s birth took place on 27 September 1973 in Bath, Somerset, England. She was born as Indira Anne Varma to an Indian father and a Swiss-Italian mother. She is the only child of her parents and does not have any siblings. 

Education, Ethnicity

She enrolled at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art (RADA) in London in 1992, graduating from the same in 1995. Varma was also a member of the Musical Youth Theatre Company.

Her ethnicity includes Indian, Swiss, and Genoese-Italian.

Indira Varma – Boyfriend, Husband, Children, Divorce

Indira Varma is a married woman. She married her longtime boyfriend Colin Tierney in 1996. With her husband, she has a child- a daughter named Evelyn Tierney. The couple resides in Hornsey, London and there have been no rumors of extramarital affairs or divorce.

Colin is also an actor and is well known for starring in The Walk (2005), Nowhere Boy (2009), and Splintered (2010).

Indira Varma – Career

Before fame

Indira Varma started her career soon after graduation in 1996. That year she was cast as Maya in the film Kama Sutra: A Tale of Love and in the TV series Crucial Tales. 

This was soon followed by roles in Clancy's Kitchen (1997), Jinnah (1998), Bride and Prejudice (2004) and in the TV series Psychos (1999), Attachments (2000-2001), In a Land of Plenty (2001), Arena, Broken News (2005), Little Britain (2005).

Finally, in 2005, she landed her breakthrough role of Niobe of the Voreni in the TV series Rome. She portrayed the character until 2007.

Films, Series

Since then Indira Varma has starred in Torchwood (2006), 3 lbs (2006), The Whistleblowers (2007), Moses Jones  (2009), Human Target (2010-2011), Silk (2012), and Paranoid (2016). Carnival Row (2019).

In 2014, Varma landed the role of Ellaria Sand in Game of Thrones, portraying the character until 2017. In films, she has starred in Mindscape (2013), Exodus: Gods and Kings (2014), Official Secrets (2019), The One and Only Ivan, Dreamland, and Netflix's Holiday Secrets  (2019) among others.

She is also active in theatre and has been acting in plays since 1997.
