As an actor Fry began his career in 2006, his debut role being in episodes of the TV series The Bill as Darrel Cunningham / Baxter Ryan. This was followed by the role of the main character Swing in the short-lived series Massive in 2008. The same year he was cast as Lu'kibu in the action-adventure film 10,000 BC, which earned him international recognition.

He is also a musician, playing numerous instruments. Predominantly Fry plays guitar and released an EP with his rock/reggae band Animal Circus in 2012.

Over the years Joel Fry is known for starring in the films Tamara Drewe (2010), Benjamin (2018), Yesterday (2019), Love, Wedding, Repeat (2020), and Cruella (2021).

Moreover, he has portrayed the main character in the TV series White Van Man (2011-2012), Trollied (2011-2013), Plebs (2013-2016), Ordinary Lies (2016), and recurring roles in Twenty Twelve (2012), Game of Thrones (2014-2015) as Hizdahr zo Loraq.
