She is not the only child of his parents and has a sibling, a brother named Michael Hagerty, who is also an actor.

Hagerty started her professional career at a young age. She was signed into Ford Models at 15 and, in 1972, began to work at her brother’s theater group, the Production Company. Finally, in 1979, she made her off-Broadway debut with her brother’s theater production of Mutual Benefit Life.

As Julie Hagerty continued to perform in Broadway shows, she began to star in theatrical films, including Lost In America, A Midsummer Night's Sex Comedy, and Beyond Therapy.
