May Calamawy was born on October 28, 1986 in Bahrain. Her full name is May El Calamawy. Her Egyptian father Mohamed Calamawy worked as a banker while the identity of her Palestinian-Jordanian mother remains unknown. She is not the only child of her parents and has a sibling – an older brother named Tamer El Calamawy.
Although the family raised her mostly in her home country i.e. Bahrain, she has also spent years of her childhood between Doha, Qatar, and Houston, Texas.
Since 2015, she is based in the USA.

For education, May Calamawy graduated from high school in Bahrain. She moved to Boston, Massachusetts at the age of 17 to study industrial design as per her father’s wishes. However, she moved to Dubai for 5 years before moving back to the USA to pursue a career as an actress.
After getting into Emerson College, she earned a B.A. in theatre studies.
Calamawy took courses at the William Esper Studio of Performing Arts.

At the start of her career, May Calamawy mostly worked in short films – dividing her time between Dubai and Abu Dhabi. His debut screen role was in the 2006 film Thursday as Kelly Spencer.
During this time, she worked in the short films Temperance (2007), Santa Claus in Baghdad (2008), Hassad Al Möta (2011), Paradise Falls (2011), A Genie Called Gin (2012), and in an episode of the TV series Checking In (2011).
Finally, Calamawy was cast as Aisha in the 2013 film Djinn, which was the first horror film to be produced in the United Arab Emirates. This is considered her breakthrough role.
