Having dropped out of high school to perform in a local play, Jones moved to New York City at the age of 19 to further pursue her career. In 1989, Rachel Bay Jones worked as an understudy in Broadway’s The Gershwin Theatre production of Meet Me in St. Louis. With a touring company, she had a national tour of Grand Hotel (1990), and Fiddler on the Roof (2000). 

Other theatre credits include in Broadway production of Hair (2009), Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown (2010), Off Broadway’s Hello Again, etc.

Her role as Catherine in the 2013 revival of Pippin at the American Repertory Theatre and Music Box Theatre gained her much recognition. Since then she has worked in a theatre production of First Daughter Suite (2015), Dear Evan Hansen (2015-2018), and Next to Normal (2020), among others.
