Early Days

Chao worked at Disneyland as an international tour guide for some time before turning to acting as a professional. Aided by supportive parents, at the age of five, she began acting in a California-based Peking opera traveling company. During the summers, she was sent to Taiwan to increase her acting skills.

As a child actor, she starred in the 1970 episode of Here's Lucy. After a year of working as a radio news writing intern at radio station KNX, she eventually returned to acting.

Rosalind Chao’s breakthrough came with the role of Soon-Lee, a South Korean refugee, in the TV series M*A*S*H. She reprised the character in the M*A*S*H sequel: 1983's AfterMASH.
