Who is Simu Liu?

Simu Liu is an actor, writer, and stunt performer by profession and Canadian by nationality. He is well known for starring in Kim's Convenience, and Fresh off the Boat and will play  Shang-Chi in  Marvel Cinematic Universe’s Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings.

Simu Liu – Bio, Age, Parents, Siblings

Simu Liu’s birth took place on April 19, 1989, in Harbin, China. To escape a regime in their home country, his mother Zheng Liu, and his father Zhenning Liu moved to Canada to study at Queen’s University. Simu Liu's grandparents raised him and when he was 5 years old, he reunited with his parents.

Liu was then raised in Harbin. However, his relationship with his parents did not improve. His childhood was complicated- filled with anger, sadness, and resentment where he struggled to balance traditional lifestyle and modern lifestyle.

He is the only child of his parents and does not have any brothers or sisters.

Education, Ethnicity

After following his parent’s dreams, Simu Liu completed high school at the University of Toronto Schools. He then studied for 2 years at the University of Western Ontario before transferring to Ivey Business School to study finance and accounting.

His ethnicity is Chinese.

Simu Liu – Girlfriend, Wife, Children, Divorce

Simu Liu mostly keeps a low profile when it comes to his romantic endeavors. He was not known to have dated anyone and nothing was known about his ex-girlfriends. He has yet to marry, take a wife, and start a family.

He is currently dating his girlfriend Jade Bender.

Also in recent years, Simu Liu has revealed that his relationship with his parents has improved.

Simu Liu – Career

Early Career

Following his parents’ dreams, he worked as an accountant at Deloitte. But in 2012, he was laid off. Fearful that he had disappointed his parents, he even considered throwing himself off the balcony. Instead, Simu Liu kept his secret and began to explore other career options.

In response to a Craigslist ad, he starred on the set of a Guillermo del Toro movie as a minimum-wage extra. 

He fell in love with acting and film-making and checked Craigslist every morning in search of similar opportunities. A few months later Simu Liu booked his first national commercial and also came out to his parents as an actor.

Breakthrough

Soon Simu Liu landed minor roles in numerous TV series including Mayday (2013), Beauty and the Beast (2014), Blood and Water (2015), Heroes Reborn (2015), and Taken (2016).

Finally, his breakthrough came in 2016 as he was cast as Jung Kim in Kim's Convenience. This gained him national as well as international recognition.

Since then he has had guest appearances in the TV series Orphan Black (2017), Bad Blood (2017), The Expanse (2018), and Fresh Off the Boat (2019), and was the main cast in Yappie (2018).

In July 2019 it was announced that Simu Liu would star as the main role of Shang-Chi in  Marvel Cinematic Universe’s 2021 film Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings.

As a writer, he wrote the short film Meeting Mommy and was the writer of the second season of Blood and Water.
