Valerie Bertinelli was born on April 23, 1960, in Wilmington, Delaware, USA. Her full name is Valerie Anne Bertinelli, her mother’s name is Nancy (née Carvin) Bertinelli and his father Andrew Bertinelli worked as a General Motors executive.

Her parents raised her alongside her three siblings – older brothers David Bertinelli, Patrick Bertinelli, and Drew Bertinelli. She also had another older brother named Mark who died from accidental poisoning at 17 months of age. The family moved to numerous places including Claymont, Clarkston, Shreveport, Oklahoma due to his father’s work.

Actress Courteney Cox is her cousin.

Valerie Bertinelli began dating Canadian singer, actor, musician, and composer Paul Shaffer when she was 16 and he was 27 years old.

After years of dating, she went on to marry rock musician Eddie Van Halen on April 11, 1981. With her husband, she has a child, a son named Wolfgang William Van Halen, who was born on March 16, 1991. The pair separated in 2001 and eventually divorced on December 20, 2007.

In her biography, Bertinelli wrote that her divorce from Van Halen was due to his cocaine addiction, and smoking habits. Despite his diagnosis of oral cancer, his refusal to quit his habits led them to separation. However, they did remain amicable and she was at his bedside when he passed away in October 2020.

In 2004, Valerie Bertinelli began her relationship with financial planner Tom Vitale in 2004. They announced their engagement in May 2010 and married on January 1, 2011, in Malibu, California. Their marriage ended in divorce on November 22, 2022, having filed for divorce a year prior.
